Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Cambridge Heath Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Cambridge Heath is committed to providing gardening services in a manner that protects the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors, and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all gardening, landscaping, and maintenance activities we undertake.
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective control measures. Everyone working for or with Gardeners Cambridge Heath is expected to cooperate with this policy and to take reasonable care of themselves and others who may be affected by their actions.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that appropriate resources, training, and supervision are provided. Supervisors are responsible for implementing safe systems of work on site, monitoring compliance with this policy, and reporting issues promptly so they can be addressed.
All gardeners, landscapers, and support staff have a duty to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear required protective clothing, and report hazards, incidents, or near misses without delay. Clients also have responsibilities to provide safe access to their premises, inform us of known hazards, and cooperate with any control measures we put in place.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any site, we assess the risks associated with the tasks, tools, equipment, and environment. This includes considering uneven or slippery ground, working near roads, water features, fragile structures, steep slopes, and any other site-specific hazards. Where risks are identified, we implement controls such as barriers, signs, alternative methods of work, or additional protective equipment.
Our gardeners follow safe working practices for routine activities such as lawn care, planting, hedge cutting, pruning, use of ladders, soil preparation, and clearance work. Work is planned to avoid unnecessary manual handling and to minimise exposure to noise, vibration, dust, and fumes.
Use of Tools, Machinery, and Equipment
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Cambridge Heath are selected, maintained, and inspected to ensure they are suitable and safe for the intended tasks. This includes lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, hand tools, and any powered equipment used on site.
Only trained and competent personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery. Guards, safety switches, and other protective features must never be removed or bypassed. Equipment is checked before each use and any defects are reported immediately and taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided where necessary to protect workers from residual risks that cannot be fully controlled by other means. This may include safety boots, gloves, eye protection, ear protection, high-visibility clothing, and respiratory protection where appropriate.
Employees are required to wear the protective equipment issued to them, to keep it in good condition, and to report damage or loss as soon as possible so that replacements can be arranged. Supervisors are responsible for checking that PPE is used correctly and consistently on site.
Chemicals, Fertilisers, and Green Waste
When using garden chemicals, fertilisers, or soil improvers, we follow manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Products are stored, transported, and applied safely to avoid harm to people, pets, plants, and wildlife. We take care to avoid contamination of neighbouring properties and water sources.
Green waste such as cuttings, branches, and soil is managed in a safe and tidy manner. Work areas are kept as clear as practicable to reduce trip hazards. Waste is removed or stored appropriately pending collection or reuse, in line with environmental and local waste management requirements.
Public Safety and Site Management
We take reasonable steps to protect clients, neighbours, visitors, and passers-by from risks arising from our gardening activities. This may include establishing exclusion zones, using warning signs or cones, controlling access to work areas, and scheduling higher-risk tasks at times that minimise potential conflict with public use.
Cables, hoses, and tools are routed and positioned to avoid trip hazards. Work that creates significant noise, dust, or obstruction is carried out with due consideration for those living or working nearby. Vehicles are parked and manoeuvred safely, taking account of pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, and repetitive movements. We are committed to reducing the risk of strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal injuries by using mechanical aids, team lifting, and sensible load limits wherever possible. Staff are encouraged to use good handling techniques and to avoid sudden or excessive exertion.
Workers are expected to report any discomfort or signs of injury early so that workloads and methods can be reviewed and adjustments made as needed. Breaks and hydration are encouraged, particularly during hot or physically demanding work.
Weather, Environment, and Lone Working
Outdoor gardening work is affected by weather conditions. Work is planned to minimise risks associated with heat, cold, strong winds, heavy rain, and reduced visibility. Protective clothing and sun protection are used where appropriate, and work may be postponed or adjusted if conditions become unsafe.
Where staff work alone, we implement suitable checks and communication arrangements to ensure their safety, including clear information about location, expected duration, and procedures for reporting in or requesting assistance.
Training, Communication, and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Cambridge Heath provides appropriate information, instruction, and training so that employees can carry out their duties safely and competently. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, and refresher training where needed. Safety information is communicated clearly and updated when equipment, methods, or regulations change.
We review this policy regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations or to relevant health and safety requirements. We investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses to identify root causes and implement improvements, aiming for continual enhancement of our health and safety performance.
Policy Review and Commitment
This Health and Safety policy is endorsed by the management of Gardeners Cambridge Heath and applies to all locations where we provide gardening and related services. It will be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains suitable, sufficient, and effective. Our objective is to maintain a safe and healthy working environment for everyone affected by our activities and to foster a culture where safety is an integral part of how we operate.
